MeWe is nowhere near as big or as popular as Facebook so why on earth would I dump Facebook for MeWe?

The first reason, to be utterly blunt, is I hate what Facebook has become and how much power it holds over it’s users. I know of several people who have faced bans and we are not talking of far right or far left extremists here, just normal everyday folk and they have subsequenty lost control of their own business pages and groups with seemingly no route of appeal. I won’t put myself under their control.

The second reason for abandoning Facebook is the constant propoganda around Covid-19. When I go on social media I don’t need to be reminded every 10 seconds about this subject and unfortuantely Twitter seems to be going the same way with splash screens you can’t avoid. Enough already.

MeWe Groups

So what’s different about WeWe?

Well here’s the thing, I kind of stumbled upon MeWe a year or so ago and did not really get into it as I did not know anyone there and my friends were not members. My first impressions were that it was a lovely clean and uncluttered timeline with no adverts whatsoever and no tracking which I actually place as quite important now. It was more recenty that I decided to give it a proper go and set up a couple of groups on there to see what happened and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Image uploads are so much better resolution, chat within a group is engaging and fun, video is nice and clear and a whole host of other little things that made it simply ‘nicer’. My groups had more engagement on MeWe in a day than my Facebook group had in a week so that kind of sealed it for me.

Sure there is a learning curve but it’s really not that much different to use than Facebook, it took perhaps an hour or so to work out where everything was and boy I do not miss those adverts or constant bleating on about CV19!

MeWe is free, just like the other major social media networks but do have some paid features like business pages etc but most won’t need any of that. You can buy add ons like themes (I bought the dark theme for $1.99), stickers and other stuff like that but really, you don’t have to pay a penny if you don’t want to. Every now and then you may get a splash screen when you log in offering you a trial of the extra features but this is a minor annoyance considering on other platforms you are bombarded with adds 24/7. And of course not being tracked is an added bonus too!

I am happy with my decision and sure, it may take longer to build an audience or a groupĀ  but at least I am in tota control of it all. Why not give it a try yourself – the link to our new Eye Candy Photography & Cinematography group is below.
